Chapter Nine

Apparently, this school takes physical fitness way too seriously. I hadn’t picked physical fitness as an elective buy according to my classmates, every student has to take P.E., regardless of grade level. I was bummed but since I didn’t mind sweating, I changed into my school-issued burgundy and gold t-shirt and gold shorts. We were free to walk/run around the track or play basketball, just as long as we weren’t standing around doing nothing—that would result in a zero, which was worse than getting an F.

I hadn’t warmed up to any of the girls yet, but as I walked around the indoor track, I couldn’t help but feel left out as the girls gossiped about upcoming parties and dances. One of the girls, Shelly, must’ve been the ringleader. She always got the last word in and they all hung on to her every word. I made sure to stay out of her path.

I took my time walking and eye-stalked the cute guys on the basketball court. I blushed when I caught the eye of Taj for just a brief second—the same cute guy I saw with Adrian in the cafeteria. He turned around and shot the ball into the hoop effortlessly.

I loved the way Taj’s caramel eyes almost matched his complexion; his skin was practically glowing with sweat and I was a little jealous. How could a guy’s skin look better than mine?

I made my way around the track a couple more times and stopped to tie my shoes.

When I went to grab a water, I once again found myself staring back at the basketball court but didn’t see Taj.

“Why don’t you take a picture?” said a deep voice pulling out of my thoughts. “It’ll last longer.” My mouth was agape as I looked up and into his Taj’s hazel eyes and a grin that pulled me in.

I shook my head and found my voice. “Um, sorry. I didn’t mean to stare at you like a creep.”

God, why couldn’t I stop staring at his sweaty body? And where was this guy’s shirt? Not that he needed to cover up.

Cautiously, he took a couple steps closer to me, closing the gap. I swear he smelled like sweat and something else entirely intoxicating.

Would it be weird if I reached out and touched his chest, just to feel the firmness of his pecs?

Probably not a good idea, stupid, I chastised myself.

“It’s okay, I’m used to it. What’s your name, stalker?” his voice was playful.

“Lorena,” I said, trying to keep my cool. “And I’m not a stalker, I promise.”

“I believe you,” he said, tossing the ball up in the air and letting it spin on his index finger. I noticed his shorts were sitting dangerously low on his hips and there was no trace of underwear. There was definitely a bulge there I shouldn’t be staring at. I turned to resume my walk around the track when he said, “Hold up! Where you going?” In two steps he was walking beside me.

“Nowhere in particular.
